Overview
Commercial General Liability (CGL) insurance is designed to protect your business from financial losses when held legally responsible for causing bodily injuries, property damages, or Personal & Advertising Liability to third parties through business interactions.
This type of insurance coverage is often a foundation for any business’s insurance program.
What does Commercial General Liability (CGL) cover?
Bodily Injury liability
Pays for the costs of defending lawsuits and for damages awarded against an insured person because of bodily injuries or death that an insured caused to other people in an accident for which the insured is deemed legally responsible
Example: Medical expenses for customer injuries sustained from slip-and-fall or fire accidents while shopping at a business premises.
Property damage liability
Pays for the costs of defending lawsuits and for damages awarded against an insured business because of damage to someone else’s property caused in an accident for which they are deemed legally responsible.
Example: A fire started at a restaurant during service and damaged customers’ belongings, property damage liability pays for the legal defence costs and repairs or replacement of physical assets to the affected customers.
Tenant legal liability
Pays for accidental damages to the landlord’s building for which the tenant (business) is deemed legally and contractually responsible under the lease.
Example: A retail tenant leaves a space heater on overnight, causing a fire that damages the leased unit. Tenant Legal liability covers the expenses for repairs or any legal defence costs.
Product/Completed operations liability
Pays for all bodily injuries and property damages that arise from a business’s products, provided that accidents occurred after the business has relinquished physical possession of the product it sold.
Example: A retail tenant leaves a space heater on overnight, causing a fire that damages the leased unit. Tenant Legal liability covers the expenses for repairs or any legal defence.
Personal & Advertising liability
Covers damages the business becomes legally responsible to pay arising from the business’s own advertising activities, such as claims of libel, slander and other injuries affecting a third party’s reputation, right or privacy.
Example: A business runs an online advertisement that unknowingly uses another company’s copyrighted image, inviting infringement lawsuit. Personal & Advertising coverage pays for the legal defence and damages.
What is not covered under Commercial General Liability (CGL)?
Exclusions contained under policy documents lists situations or accidents that are not covered under the policy.

Commonly seen exclusions under a Commercial General Liability (CGL) include:
Professional Advices / Quality of services
Commercial General Liability (CGL) does not cover claims arising from the professional mistakes, negligence or failure to perform a professional service as promised, such as:
Design errors
Performance of advice/services received
Missed deadlines or incomplete services
To cover these risks, a separate Errors & Omissions liability policy is required Ownr Insurance currently only offer this coverage to selected industries only. Start an online quote to check If your business qualifies.
Automobile, Watercraft and Aircraft accidents
Commercial General Liability does not cover transportation related accidents. Specific insurance coverages, often required by law (such as automobile or watercraft insurance), are needed separately.
Ownr Insurance currently does not offer any transportation related insurance coverages.
Employee workplace injuries (or Employer’s liability)
Commercial General Liability (CGL) does not provide coverage for injuries or sickness caused to employees during employment or while performing business duties.
Government provided worker’s compensation plan can be obtained to cover workplace injuries, such as:
Worker Compensation Board of Alberta - Alberta
WorkSafeBC - British Columbia
If you do not meet the government’s requirements, an Employer's Liability endorsement can be obtained. However, Ownr Insurance currently does not offer this coverage or any government insurance plan registration services.
Dishonest, International or criminal acts
Business activities, conducts or products that are prohibited under the Canadian law are not covered under Commercial General Liability (CGL).
Pollution or Environmental Damage
Expenses related to allegations of pollution and contamination to the environment are not covered under Commercial General Liability (CGL).
A pollution liability policy is needed to address this risk. Ownr Insurance does not offer this coverage at this time.
Electronic data or Access/Disclosure of Confidential Information
Loss, corruption and damages to third-party’s electronic data are not covered under Commercial General Liability (CGL). This exclusion also applies to unauthorized access or disclosure of confidential information.
Cyber Liability coverage will be required to cover cyber and data related liability risks.
