Individuals submitting a Federal Incorporation in Ontario must complete identity verification. As you complete your application in Ownr, you will be guided through the identity verification procedure. Successful completion of the verification requires you to scan an approved form of government-issued identification and capture a live photo of yourself. Read more about the process here.

If you're having trouble completing a successful verification, see the tips below.

How to Scan the ID

Ensure the ID is usable

  1. Verify that your identification is not expired.

  2. Verify that your identification is accepted by our Identify Verification tool. See the list of accepted IDs here.

Take an appropriate photo

  1. Clean the camera lens on your mobile phone.

  2. Verify there are no smudges or scratches on the ID.

  3. Ensure the area is well-lit.

  4. Place the ID on a dark background. Placing it on an entirely black surface is best.

  5. Place your camera lens directly above the ID and ensure it fits inside the rectangle on the screen (for both front and back photos). Photos taken from a side angle will not be accepted.

  6. Ensure nothing is obstructing any part of the ID, such as your fingers. For passport photos, bend open the passport and lay it flat on a table, instead of holding it open with your hand.

  7. Ensure there is no glare from a light above. Any glare or flashback may obscure the information on the ID.

How to Take the Selfie

  1. Remove any accessories (other than prescription glasses or religious headgear) that make you look different from the photo on your ID.

  2. Ensure there is no hair covering your face.

  3. Stand in a well-lit area. Natural light (for example, by a window) typically provides the best result.

  4. Ensure your face is fully lit, and there are no shadows cast on your face.

  5. Look into the camera and not at yourself on the phone screen.

  6. Smile when prompted, then follow the instructions on-screen to stop smiling.

  7. Hold the camera steady to prevent a blurred image.

If the above suggestions do not result in a successful verification, try using a different piece of ID. If you need help completing the verification, contact our Customer Support Team at [email protected].
