Identity Documentation Requirements

Certain registrations within Ownr require a valid identity document.

Depending on the type of registration you complete, you may be required to provide a valid form of identification (ID). Please note that expired documents will not be accepted. All documents must be original, unless otherwise noted.


RBC business bank account

Application in Ownr

You will need ONE of the following forms of ID to apply for an RBC Business Bank Account within Ownr. You will be asked to enter the details of the document into Ownr.

  • Canadian Passport

  • Canadian Permanent Resident Card

  • Canadian Drivers License

RBC appointment

You will need to attend an in-person appointment at an RBC branch to finalize your business bank account opening. Bring TWO of the following forms of ID to the appointment.

  • Canadian Passport

  • Canadian Permanent Resident Card

  • Canadian Drivers License

Your RBC Advisor may accept other forms of ID on a case-by-case basis.

If your company has multiple owners, all owners with 25% ownership or more will need to meet the ID requirements for the in-person bank appointment.


Sole proprietorship registrations and incorporations

Due to government requirements, valid identification is mandatory for Federal Incorporations in Ontario, as well as Sole Proprietorships and Incorporations in Alberta and Quebec. Other registrations on Ownr do not require identity documentation.

You will need to upload ONE of the following forms of ID when completing the registrations listed below.

Federal incorporations in Ontario

Canadian identification documents

  • Canadian Passport

  • Provincial Driver’s License

  • Permanent Residence Card

  • Certificate of Indian Status

  • Provincial ID

US identification documents

  • American Passport

  • State Driver’s License

International passports from accepted countries

Sole proprietorships and incorporations in Alberta

  • Driver’s License

  • Government-issued ID Card

  • Passport

  • NEXUS Card

  • Canadian Law Enforcement Identification (local, provincial, federal)

  • Canadian Military Identification

  • Canadian Secure Certificate of Indian Status (new version only)

  • Metis Nation of Alberta Membership Card (new version only)

Incorporations in Quebec

For Canadian residents

  • Passport

  • Driving or learner’s license

  • Health insurance card

  • Canadian permanent resident card

  • Immigration document issued by the Government of Canada (IMN-1442)

  • Official identification documents for military, police or diplomats stationed in Canada

  • Secure certificate of Indian status

  • Quebec birth certificate

  • Identification document issued by a Canadian province or territory that includes a first name, last name and date of birth

Originals or copies of the above documents are acceptable.

For Non-Canadian residents

  • Passport

  • Any other identification document issued by a government authority that includes a first name, last name and date of birth

Originals or copies of the above documents are acceptable.
